What types of boilers are available?

Before choosing what size boiler you need for your home, it is important to decide on the type of boiler you need. There are 3 types of boilers available and these include...

Combi Boilers

These are very compact in size and combine all the elements of a typical central heating system into a single unit. They also use condensing technology to provide hot water on demand.

Combi boilers are generally well-liked due to their compact size and good efficiency. Due to this, it makes them the ideal boiler option for small or medium-sized homes.

Regular Boilers

This type of boiler is often referred to as a heat-only boiler. It heats and distributes water throughout the house using a network of tanks and heat exchangers. A cold water tank is needed, this is with water from the mains before being fed into a hot water cylinder.  Regular boilers are preferred in homes that have a high demand for hot water and heating.

System Boilers

System boilers are appropriate for bigger families and they also feature a separate cylinder for storing hot water. Even when multiple showers and taps are open at once, they can keep the temperature of the hot water constant across your home. System boilers are ideal for large-sized homes, similar to regular boilers.

factors impacting boiler size

Are there any factors that impact the size of the boiler I need?

Choosing the right size boiler for your home's heating requirements comes after you've chosen the kind of boiler you want. Apart from the type of boiler you need, these factors also affect the size of boiler you need for your home:

- Number of bedrooms

- Number of bathrooms

- Number of radiators

So, what size combi boiler do I need?

Because they have to heat water on demand, combi boilers often have a higher power output than system and heat-only boilers. The size is heavily dependent on the factors listed above, for example, if you have a 2 bedroom house with 9 radiators and 1 bathroom then you need a 24-27kW sized boiler.

If you have a 4-bedroom house with 20 radiators and more than 2 bathrooms, then you need to get a 35-43kW sized boiler.

What size regular or system boiler do I need?

Because combi boilers store hot water in advance, system and conventional boilers have lower power output. The recommended size for a 2 bedroom home with 1 bathroom and up to 10 radiators is between 9 - 18kW.

For a 4-bedroom house with more than 20 radiators and 3 bathrooms, the recommended boiler size is 27-40kW.
